Cheap Energy Supplier – Bulb

Bulb – Energy

I had been with my energy supplier for about 2 years when a friend of mine told me about an energy supplier they had just moved to – Bulb. I was very lucky as at the time they were offering £100 to both me AND my chum once I’d completed my move to them. This was quite an incentive and I’ve not seen it repeated recently.

Its important that you do check out your options if you are looking to move suppliers. Your energy usage may be different to mine so pull out some old bills and see what you’ve actually used. There are a number of websites that let you check the cheapest/best offers from energy suppliers. Make sure you do this before you commit to anyone. Even after checking the other suppliers, Bulb worked out cheaper and that was BEFORE the £100 credit on my account.

Ethical Energy

Bearing in mind gas is taken out of the ground and electricity can be generated multiple ways, I feel it is important to be as ‘ethical’ as possible when it comes to finding your supplier. Bulb refers to itself as ‘the UK’s biggest green energy supplier’ and it has to say this about the energy.

For every unit you use, we make sure a unit is produced and put on the grid by a renewable source including solar, wind and hydro. Plus, our gas is 100% carbon neutral. 10% is green gas produced from renewable sources like food or farm waste. And we offset the rest of the gas we supply by supporting carbon reduction projects around the world.

Another interesting point is that Bulb customers save over 3.5 tonnes of CO2 each, every year. Knowing that you are trying to do your best for the planet makes this an even more attractive swap.

What’s the Catch?

This is a hard question. Bulb are open and up-front on all their charges. They also don’t tie you in for a 12 month contract so you could get your £50 credit, wait until you’ve spent all of it, and then move else-where. Based on this I don’t think there is a catch. You will also have your own £50 referral code to share with your friends & family and THEY will get an account credit when they switch.

As you aren’t tied into a 12 month contract you can leave at any time. For me this removes a level of risk that signing up for British Gas or NPower have because you are signing a 12 (or 18) month contract when you join them.

Referral Process

This is super simple. For everyone who clicks my Bulb link, they will get £50 credit on their account. I will also get £50 credit once your switch is complete so it is beneficial to both of us!

You can start your switch and get your £50 credit by clicking the banner below.

How are Bulb Working For Me?

Advertisements

I’ve been with Bulb just under a year so far (Sept ’19) and it still manages to be one of the cheapest suppliers. It has a 5* status on Trust Pilot with over 22 thousand reviews. I have an app that tells me how much energy I’m using plus allows me to easily submit meter readings. I will check my usage when my first year is up (Nov ’19) and see whether swapping to another supplier will save me money. I will also want to look at the other supplier’s ethical offerings.

Smart-y Pants

I’m avoiding a smart meter so this is a thing which is important to me – I don’t have any interest in getting one. Bulb does offer a smart meter and is in the process of rolling them out for customers who want them. I know the government is strongly pushing these new smart-meters however rarely does the government do anything that is actually beneficial to the consumer!  Does this Tin-Foil-Hat look good on me? 😀
