DJI Osmo Mobile 3

This blog post is going to be part of a series of blog posts outlining the tech I use in my day-to-day life. It wont be exciting, sorry if that’s your expectation!, but it will let you know what use to create my blog and how I spend my spare time. This blog post looks at my DJI Osmo Mobile 3

What is The DJI Osmo Mobile 3?

The DJI Osmo Mobile 3 is a phone stabilisation gimbal. Simply put, this makes hand-held video pictures smoother. If you’ve never used one before then you’ll be surprised by the difference that this makes to any videos you record.

DJI are known for their drones but this is some consumer-level tech that they offer at a very reasonable price.

Why Did I Get an DJI Osmo Mobile 3?

Until I purchased this, I had the DJI Osmo Mobile 2. For an example of how that helped on video you can check out a video I made when I attended Friendsfest 2018.

How I Made My Choice

Simple really – I had the previous version but was finding it too large to carry with me. It came in a polystyrene case but that made the non-folding Mobile 2 even bigger. This had a knock-on affect that I didn’t take it out with me as often as I probably should. Seeing how small this newer version folded down to, I was very happy to sell my old one on and buy this.

The Arrival

I actually ordered this from Curry/PC World on eBay where I ordered the Combo pack. This was £20 more expensive than the stand-alone unit but I liked having the other its that come with the Combo pack.

The Combo version was £119.99 with the stand-alone version being £99.99. Here are some links for the Osmo Mobile 3 – Direct link on Amazon and then a link to the search on eBay.

Life with the DJI Osmo Mobile 3

So far I’ve used it for recording a couple of tasting videos. With lock-down there hasn’t been much opportunity to go out and about with it – I have broadcast using Facebook Live while on my government-mandated daily exercise. Using the camera in ‘selfie-mode’ and the Mobile 3 to smooth out the video while I’m walking along.

What Have I Done With It?

I’ve made a fancy video for Instagram using just the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 and the DJI Mimo app.

I do need to work on improving my lighting and camera height but all the rotation was physically done on the gimbal automatically and the sound was part of the ‘story’ on the app.

The Next Steps

There is so much I’ve not used on the Mobile 3 yet. It offer auto-tracking so if I set up a full sized tripod I could have it follow me around while presenting to camera. By using the app I’m able to use hand signals to start filming or take a selfie. These are things I’ve not done yet but I will be doing to make sure I get the most out of the device.

With it being so small it fits in my bag with plenty of spare room so there is no excuse for leaving it at home.

The Reverend’s Final Thought

I’ve had the Mobile 3 a few months now but I’ve not been able to use it too much yet. We are currently under lock-down so everything needs to be at home. If you are looking for something to improve your videos while out and about then the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 is a sound investment and for £100 (or just over if you want the combo version) you should see an improvement of quality much larger than you would think possible. The addition of ‘stories’ to the app means that with just your phone and the gimbal you could have an instagramable video created in moments without the hassle of downloading to a computer and video editing something together.
