The Reverend Watches … Jessica Jones
I’m a massive fan of the Marvel Universe and although this series is a little older than some of the more recent ones, I had still not seen it. The Defenders has just been released and seeing as I’ve seen all the other series relating to the superheros in The Defenders, it was only right I watched Jessica Jones.
Summary
After failing to make it as a proper superhero, Jessica Jones becomes a Private Investigator. She investigates various cases across New York and meets other people with special powers however not all of them have good intentions. A superhero who doesn’t want to be a superhero anymore but still uses her powers as part of her ‘day’ (night) job. The main baddie in this series is ace and extremely well acted. I didn’t know about it before I watched the series so it was a great suprise.
Reverend Reviews
This is a gritty series and thats for sure. We learn more about Jessica throughout the whole season and her supporting cast also develop along-side her. It is certainly not for kids and there are a couple of sex scenes which really don’t add much to the story line so I’m not sure why they were put there – its a cheap TV trick which may have just been kept in to keep the ‘adult’ rating of the series. The gore and blood isn’t excessive but there are a couple of shot of gratuitous violence which reminds you that you are watching something not aimed at kids.
I didn’t know anything about the Jessica Jones character or storyline so when the main baddie was introduced it was a pleasant surprise. Excellently acted and brilliant casting brought the character to life, and although there are some pretty major differences between the TV version and the comic book version, they do give a ‘nod’ to his comic book stylings.
The supporting cast includes Carrie-Ann Moss who it is good to see being not-Trinity. Like the other characters during the series she developes loads and takes more of a starring role later in the season. Is she one of Jessica Jones’ friends? Is she Jessica’s 2nd only friend – after Trish? You’ll need to watch to find out.
New York makes for a good backdrop for the TV series. It does look a little similar to DareDevil and Luke Cage in style but that is to be expected. Luke Cage appearing early in the series does help give it a familiar feel but I’m not sure he adds too much to the series as a whole. Jessica Jones is the star and doesn’t need superhero sidekicks.
The finale builds over a couple of episodes. There are some great twists and a good ending to the story that arcs through the season. It certainly leaves you wanting for series 2 – expected in 2018!
